Passive House Cornish Cottages

ƒ(𝒏) Architects were commissioned to resolve a very challenging vacant site in West Cornwall. After a series of design iterations, a pair of Passive House Cottages were proposed. While outwardly small the cottages provide flexible family accommodation that exceeds the Nationally Described Space Standard and a bespoke entrance design achieves M4(2) level access despite complex levels. Existing granite from the site will be reused in the facade and traditional details help bed the scheme into the location which is simultaneously a Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The design to achieve the Passive House PLUS standard means the houses generate at least as much energy as they use in normal use, with effectively zero energy bills achieved by rooftop generation via an extensive photovoltaic slate roof installation.

The scheme is expected to receive planning approval in early 2025.

The existing ground is lower than road level so a planted dry stone terraced wall was designed to provide a private and airy outlook for recessed ground floor accommodation. Front doors are positioned on a oversize stair landing and are accessed externally by a lightweight grating bridge embedded into the hard landscape.
