When the pandemic hit in March 2020, we were lucky to be able to retreat to our newly completed home studio, which was only completed days before the first lockdown. A significant benefit of Georgian Buildings are the extremely high ceilings, despite being quite small in plan, our second bedroom features a 3.5m ceiling and with load-bearing concrete block walls on all sides was a prime candidate for installation of a lightweight mezzanine bed. An austere palette of OSB, white-painted joists and threaded bars created the perfect backdrop for our studio, while the number of fixings to the existing walls was carefully controlled to make the process of dismantlement as easy as possible (it is a rented flat after all!). The deck of the bed, 2 desks and 2 sets of suspended shelves were cut by hand from only 3 sheets of OSB and the threaded bars were scavenged from a listing on Gumtree.
